Candace Campo - Profile of Success |
Candace Campo, connoisseur of canoe, kayak, and community, bets
you can’t say that five times fast. The 31-year-old Campo is a true
renaissance woman, who, after earning her degree in anthropology and
working as an office administrator, made a life-altering decision to
add the title of entrepreneur to her dossier. Although she was
impressed with the financial aspect of office administration, Campo
yearned to focus her life on what she truly cares for, nature and
community.
The
collective inspiration gathered from Shishalh’s (Sechelt’s) natural
beauty and enterprising aboriginal community formed an idea, while
Campo’s pride in her seven-year-old daughter Talaysay gave it the
moniker which they share. In 2002, Talaysay Kayak Adventures became a
reality, and Campo is eager to share the supporters who helped realize
her dream with the entire aboriginal community.
“TACC has been very
helpful! Not only with funding, but with management suggestions, ways
to record costs and track my expenses. I’ve really enjoyed working with
them; they convey a feeling of genuine sincerity.”
“I’ve received so much support from the
(Shishalh) band, the elders and the community; I want to pass it on. My
passion is to help my people.” Campo is striving to impact her people
through the strength of a financially independent business, and
utilizing that strength to support other endeavors within her
community, and eventually in other nations as well. “I realize I can’t
kayak for the rest of my life, so I am learning to be an operator. As
an operator of a first nation’s tour, I am also a cultural ambassador
and I believe in sharing my culture.”
One of Campo’s high-points was
designing her own logo (yes, she is also an artist), which serves as an
anchor to the present, a window to the future, and a reminder why she
became an entrepreneur. “It deeply reflects who I am and who I want to
be. I work on my business every day and I love it!” Campo is equally
forthright about what the future holds for Talaysay Kayak Adventures,
“I will keep learning and making new contacts, doing what it takes to
be successful and support others.”
Among
all of Campo’s talents, one in particular remains conspicuous beyond
all others; her ability to summarize the answers to all of my questions
into one sentence. “It makes me happy,” she says.
