The War of Art: Break through the Blocks and Win Your Inner Creative Battles |

By Steven Pressfield
Book Review
Being self-employed often requires self-motivation and for many of us, self-motivation often faces off with that ever present barrier called “procrastination.” The War of Art, by Steven Pressfield, is a quick read that addresses procrastination and motivation. There’s no need to be misled by the title key words “war” and “art”. While the author does address creative battles for writers, it applies to most people’s daily battles with staying motivated. This book is a great read for anyone who has struggled with completing a project and faced with what Pressfield refers to as “Resistance.” In The War Of Art, he writes:
“Most of us have two lives. The life we live, and the unlived life within us. Between the two stands Resistance.”
Pressfield calls our attention to an opposing force so powerful that we often don’t see it. Yet it brings defeat to a number of professional or personal pursuits including any creative art, diet, exercise regimen, effort for self improvement, or entrepreneurial pursuit. Ouch.
So what is this so called ‘resistance’? The War of Art defines the opposing force to motivation for us in a light, easy reading fashion. Although the book is written by a writer for writers, it’s relevant to anyone who has had a creative block or battles procrastination. If you’re thinking of starting a business or struggle with self motivation within your business, this is an easy, entertaining read that just might get you back into the driver’s seat of your life. At the very least, it could be a productive way to spend those moments of procrastination.
